I am not necessarily opposed to a healthcare institution acquiring high volumes of data from my electronic health record (EHR), even without my explicit consent.
Data harvesting often results in public health benefits and sometimes results in patient population benefits. Heck, rarely (very rarely!) it might even help the patient being harvested.
Yet I am deeply opposed to an institution masking this data harvesting using the phrase “patient-centric care” when they really mean “data-centric care.”
It’s like a restaurant specializing in lamp-chops touting themselves as a “lamb-centric business.” Technically it may be true, but it’s also disingenuous.
Remember the old saying: If you’re invited to dinner and you’re not at the table, then you are on the menu.
