I have posted dozens and dozens of black and white photographs on Flickr. Most of them were carefully composed. However, a photograph of a washed-out volleyball court at night (the one shown above), which I took as a quick snapshot (taken to get a sense of how my new iPhone 13 Pro did with nighttime photography), has turned out to be one of my more popular photos.

Why?

I’m not sure. I took the shot after a rainstorm at night—a less common scene. Also, the inversion of the word “Kirkland” on the volleyball net could be a point of interest. Also, I do think I captured the muddiness of the court.

Yet, overall, I find it an ugly photograph, an average photograph, and one of my least favorites.

It just goes to show how varied and surprising creative tastes can be.
