(The terrible conditions he is referring to is that of the uncommon man living in a society tied to convention.)

Hee we have two lonely geniuses standing on top of two mountain summits, separated by time. It’s rarefied air these geniuses breath, but, because of time’s arrow, only one can hear the other—yet I suspect Beethoven would have loved to also hear Nietzsche.
