I appreciate the benefits of engaging with all information on a screen including verbal content, or the visual information contained in figures and tables.

However, if I am seeking a deep understanding of some subject matter, nothing is better for me than printing out articles and reading them with a highlighter and pen in hand.

The physical engagement with the content is important to me and I suspect has a neurological basis—especially with conceptual information. (This is suggested in the 2014 paper: The Pen Is Mightier Than The Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking by Pam A. Mueller and Daniel M. Oppenheimer.)

So, although my iMac and my iPad aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, when I am diving deep for my writing research it’s my paper, pen, and highlighters which are my tools of choice.
