In novel writing there is the challenge of “the muddy middle.” The interest of the opening is over (usually 20%) , and the exciting climax of the ending has yet to come (usually 15-20%). It’s the middle part, the 55-60%, which can make or break a book.
Curiously, my post-op hip rehab journey is analogous. I have gotten through the immediate post-op phase, and I am off my walker, without pain. However the pain-free walking without my cane—the exciting finish—has yet to come.
Right now I am in the difficult part—the long slog—where I am doing physical therapy twice a day, and I am measuring my cane-free walking (without any limp) by feet instead of miles.
I have to keep in mind that it’s these days which truly count for my long term success. I believe that pushing myself through the next 2-3 weeks, despite my frustration with only minimal daily improvement, will determine my ability to walk with ease for years to come.
I must slog on.
