My wife and I have an old cardboard box in the middle of our living room floor. It is next to our brand new sectional sofa.
Our cat, Roo, loves this little box. He sleeps in it, he plays in it, and he hangs out in it.
I suspect he enjoys it so much because it has what is most essential to him. It has just the right height of walls, width, and depth to give him a sense of security. The cardboard itself isn’t cold but still offers some texture. And finally, it’s placed just between where my wife and I usually lounge—the perfect location for monitoring us both!
In essence, the box does what it needs to do.
There’s a lesson in here for me about my consumerism. Things don’t have to be expensive and fancy to be good. It’s often the opposite which is true. What may make something truly good and special is the low cost and the simplicity.
Thank you, Roo, for this reminder!
