I continue to build up my reference book collection on the Ancient Greek language, with the recent addition of The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek.
One of my dreams is to devote a year to learning Ancient Greek sufficiently well such that I can do a primary reading of one or two Attic Greek philosophy works. Better yet, perhaps I would even take a crack at Homeric Greek and read the Iliad! How exciting it would be to spend 60+ hours a week for a year, on acquiring this one skill.
(You see, I have two pet theories. First, to understand Ancient Greek philosophy, I must understand its language. Second, taking on a difficult intellectual challenge like this will help keep my mind sharp as I get older. This would be my chance to stress-test both theories.)
But, alas, my year-long intellectual journey (perhaps pilgrimage is a better word?) is to be delayed again. It will not be happening for me in 2022. Life has gotten in the way again.
It’s sad that I already know one of my life’s deepest regrets well before I climb into my death bed.
