Sometimes there is value to comparing apples to oranges.
In this post, I am asking you to compare top healthcare organizations with people in the context of one social media metric: Twitter followers.
Take a look at the above graph.
There is one key point I want to make, and no, it isn’t about the relationship between celebrity and Twitter.
It’s to make a point about revenue and social media presence.
CVS, a Fortune ten company, in 2016 made 177.5 BILLION Dollars in net revenues.
Katy Perry, in 2015 is estimated to have earned only 135 Million dollars ( and yes, I know that is a lot of money).
Katy Perry has 332 times the number of followers as a multibillion dollar healthcare corporation!
So what does this really mean?
It’s intellectually lazy to assume this means the difference is driven only by celebrity.
It’s valuable to compare the Twitter feeds of healthcare organizations (such as @cvspharmacy) and celebrities (such as @katyperry), then ask questions about mission, call to action, content quality, and creativity.
It’s those questions which will allow you to critical assess your own social media presence.
Look, I will grant you that part of Katy Perry’s social media presence is because she is a celebrity; but the reverse may also have some truth.
What has made her a celebrity may also have something to do with her social media mastery – and it’s always a good idea to learn from a master.
Bottom line: We all can learn something about social media from the Katy Perry’s of Twitter.
