Is tweeting “serious writing”?

If done intentionally, it certainly can be. A tweet with 280 characters can carry a haiku, a micro-poem, an insightful sentence, even a small paragraph. And sequential tweets can often contain complex stories.

Also, emojis, symbols, and different fonts—all of which can be embedded in a tweet—offer a dimension in writing that usually isn’t found in standard print.

And there is the option of adding illustrations. photos, and video, significantly expanding the written word.

Finally, there is the interactive nature of tweets, which allows for both real-time commentary and conversation—which, at least in theory, can rival the best editorial section of the best newspapers (although which in practice rarely does).

So yes, tweeting can be serious writing, even something more— perhaps a “writing+”?
