I am an average writer.

I am comfortable saying this for two reasons.

First, I say it because it is true. There are some things which I do well, and there are some things which I do poorly. Writing, for me, is neither.

Second, I say it because I aspire to become a good writer, and to become a good writer—a standard on which I am clear—I need to be honest about exactly where I am in this craft right now.

Being average at something—at most things—isn’t a sin. It’s simply a necessary step to becoming good.
