Each day I try to spend approximately one hour on a continuing education class outside of my areas of expertise.

Usually this is a formal class. For example, I just finished a Philosophy of Mind course through the University of Oxford’s Continuing Education Department, a treasure trove of excellent liberal arts courses.

However, sometimes I go local, and take classes through a regional college. For example, over the past several years through Bellevue College I’ve taken multiple photography courses—ranging from the history of photography through advanced compositional techniques. These have been great courses to stimulate my inner creative artist.

And finally, if I am not actively enrolled in these formal education programs, I always have either a MasterClass or a Great Courses class to take each evening. The MasterClasses usually involve writing, whereas the Great Courses classes I take cover much broader material, ranging from courses about opera through learning ancient languages. (In fact, the next Great Courses class on my agenda is the study of Ancient Greek—something which has been lifelong goal).

Key point: For me to consider myself roundly educated I need to be continually educating myself outside of my intellectual bubble.
