In my blog post Considering How I Read to Help Inform How I Write, I mentioned that I use my Kindle for light, fun reading—usually novels, and usually at odd hours in the middle of the night. ( The Kindle in dark mode is perfect for reading in bed at 2 a.m. without disturbing my wife!)
This month I am pouring though James Rollins and his techno-thriller Sigma Series. I am now reading his series’ twelfth book called Seventh.
The principle reason I like Rollins’ Sigma books is that they are fun to read. They read fast. They keep a core set of interesting characters. They usually have a broader theme about how ancient history conflicts with and informs modern science. And finally, they are placed in fascinating locations. I always learn something from them, but it is a very relaxed learning.
There are two more personal reasons I like reading Rollins. First he is a vet, and his books usually have elements of well-researched biology. And second, there is nearly always an interesting animal in his books, written with understanding and insight.
Simply put, as a writer Rollins is a role model for my own fiction writing, and I can only hope to do half as well as him.
